2026-09-02 | History Talk with David Glover: ‘PITY POOR BRADFORD!’

2 SEPTEMBER: ‘PITY POOR BRADFORD!’  BESS OF HARDWICK’S GRANDSON, 1st DUKE OF NEWCASTLE 1593-1676  – a new lecture from local historian David Glover.

A Royalist General who besieged Bradford in 1643, and was visited by a ghost, William Cavendish rebuilt Bolsover Castle and its fantastic Riding School.  He also built a similar complex at Welbeck Abbey.  But he was far, far more: a writer, a patron of the arts, tutor to the young Charles II, and the producer of extraordinary large folio books about horsemanship and dressage with wonderful equine engravings. He was also the husband of a remarkable second wife Margaret Lucas, a pioneer of women’s rights, and also a playwright.

This is a free event but donations are welcome.

When: Wednesday 2nd September at 11 am.

Where: GSG Pianos, The Old Chapel, Beechwood Rd, Halifax HX2 9AR.
