3-2-1 Walks – Ovenden
In Ovenden we’ve designed three routes, all starting at OSCA Foundation, Cousin Lane, Halifax HX2 8AD (what3words: ///drift.brands.living). Their website is oscafoundation.org. You can preview the routes on the fly-through videos or print off an A4 step-by-step route guide to take with you on the walk.
- Walk To Beechwood Park – This is a an easy 2.2 mile/3.5km walk taking you from the OSCA Foundation to Beechwood Park, via a quite route on largely paved surfaces with gentle inclines on the return leg. The park is well-kept, with a mix of woodland, open spaces and a network of paths to explore.
- Walk to Shroggs Park – A fun 2.5 mile/4km walk taking you from the OSCA Foundation to Shroggs Park, one of Calderdale’s best-kept parks and a relaxing green space with plenty to see and do. You will be walking on good tarmac and paved surfaces, with a short hill on the return leg.
- Exploring Ovenden Wood – A beautiful, varied and hilly 3 mile/5km hike exploring Ovenden Wood and the Wheatley valley on occasionally steep footpaths and bridleways. Look out for the disused Wheatley railway viaduct and the historic Maltings building, formerly part of the local brewing industry’s extensive facilities
3-2-1 Walks – Mixenden
In Mixenden we’ve designed three routes, all starting at Mixenden Activity Centre, Clough Lane, Halifax HX2 8SH (what3words: ///reputable.pats.hoaxes).
- 1km route: a short route around the older part of the village. This route is relatively flat and includes only smooth all-weather surfaces. All road crossings are at “dropped” curbs, making the route suitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs and for people with mobility issues. This walk should take 10-20 minutes.
- 3km route: a short “hike” up onto the hill behind Mixenden, via footpaths. This route involves some potentially muddy paths and involves a “climb” of about 1km. The views from the top of the hill are amongst the best in Calderdale and there is much to see and enjoy on this classic short walk!
- 6km route: a delightful ramble through the hamlets of Stod Fold and Brookhouse, then alongside the Hebble Brook up to Ogden Reservoir. The return route follows the same paths. There’s a 3km option (turn at the half-way point). Again, there is much to see in a remarkably varied walk, which can be muddy in places, but which involves onlt short or gentle sections of climbing.
Maps & Route Guides: To help you enjoy these walks, we have developed leaflets with maps of each walk and detailed step-by-step route directions. You can download copies here to print at home: Mixenden Ogden 6km Walk / Mixenden 3km & 1km Walks
3-2-1 Walks – Rastrick
In Rastrick we’ve plotted out three routes, all starting from the Space @ Field Lane, a busy community centre with a cafe and its own walking group. The Space is at Burnsall Road, Field Lane HD6 3JT, directly next to Field Lane Primary School. Click on the links for more detailed descriptions of the routes and maps or visit their website for more details of their walking group.
- 1km route: a short, wheelchair-friendly 1km round the Field Lane estate, all on smooth pavements with dropped curbs (allowing wheelchair and pram access) at all junctions. A 10 to 15 minute walk.
- 2km route: slightly longer and taking you onto the nearby fields and footpaths, but still relatively level and easy to walk in 20 to 30 minutes
- 3km route: a longer walk through the fields and footpaths before an uphill return along smooth pavements, leading back to The Space @ Field Lane. This walk may take 30 to 45 minutes.
Maps & Route Guides: To help you enjoy the three Rastrick walks, we have developed a leaflet with maps of each walk and detailed step-by-step route directions. You can pick up a copy at the Space @ Field Lane or download a copy here to print at home: 3-2-1 Walks Rastrick (PDF)
