2026-05-27 | Born in Song: Music in 19th Century Halifax with David Glover

27 MAY: David Glover tells the story of 19th century music in Halifax with William Priestley and Mrs Sunderland and Friends.

David starts with the foundation of Halifax Choral Society, and some of the talented musical people involved in its earlier years. William Priestley was Ann Walker’s cousin.  How were church organists involved in music events? Which local soprano became known as “The Calderdale Nightingale”, and sang before Queen Victoria?  Did you know that Paganini, Strauss and Liszt once performed in Halifax?  And then there were those wonderful Piece Hall Jubilees or “Sings”
