Calderdale Dementia Hub (CDH) has published the second volume of “Hub News”, their bimonthly newsletter for people affected by dementia and professionals in Calderdale. You can get your copy direct to your inbox and updates on events/information sessions by joining the Calderdale Dementia Hub mailing list – simply email CDH at cdh@commlinks.co.uk with your email (and whether you are a person with dementia; carer; or professional). There are limited hard copies available and we are working on an audio version.
Are You Running A Dementia Group?
Are you facilitating or leading a dementia friendly or dementia specific group in Calderdale? Calderdale Dementia Hub would like to invite you to an initial meeting for leaders and facilitators of dementia specific and dementia friendly groups in Calderdale.  We have an amazing number of groups across the district working to support people affected by dementia live their best lives. The work you do as leads and facilitators is recognised and valued as essential to both enhancing and maintaining the skills and confidence of people with dementia and carers. We want to offer the opportunity to bring us together to celebrate the great work being done and to support each other to identify solutions to common challenges.
You might be asking why Calderdale Dementia Hub is offering this? As the information, advice and signposting service for people affected by dementia in Calderdale we have a vested interest in ensuring that the widest possible network of support exists for people with dementia and carers. Aside from that we run no groups but are there to support you so can act as “honest broker” as it were! We would like to invite you to meet on Teams on Monday 24th March at 3.30pm to 4.30pm. Interested? Email Lisa or Neil via cdh@commlinks.co.uk with your details.
“Word of the Week” hits a milestone – 52 videos created!
Way back in spring 2024, we at Calderdale Dementia Hub thought that a brief set of videos on social media explaining common terms and jargon around Dementia may be helpful to people affected by dementia and professionals. On a rainy afternoon in March, loaded with three scripts, a mobile phone and not a lot of expertise (but bags of enthusiasm), we visited the Piece Hall, Central Library and a local car park. With a couple of minor issues (people in shot, not being able to see the script, and getting rained on whilst one of us sat in their car) we came away with our first three videos – “Dementia”; “Carers” and “Driving”.
The purpose of these videos was not only to help understanding of these common terms, but to break the stigma underlying them, and to widen access to information to the widest possible audience. We have had contributions from professionals, volunteers and people affected by dementia across our videos so far.

We’ve loved getting your feedback and suggestions for words and phrases you want us to tackle. Some of the words you’ve asked for us to cover are challenging to do in the 90 seconds that social media demands but we’re more than happy to take that challenge head-on! None of this would be possible without our brilliant volunteers who have gone the extra mile to learn editing and social media techniques to make us look as good as we do!

Do let us know if what you think of our content – the YouTube site also has a section with videos featuring people with dementia in Calderdale – and any ideas you want us to cover!  To get in touch with us or feedback email cdh@commlinks.co.uk

Dementia Carer Information Sessions go monthly!
In addition to the one-to-one information, advice and signposting that the Dementia Support Coordinators at Calderdale Dementia Hub provide to people with dementia and carers, we also offer regular group based information sessions. We are delighted to say that we have now expanded our Carer sessions from quarterly to monthly.
Every first Tuesday of the month we offer an information session tailored to the needs of carers of people with dementia. These are designed as interactive sessions with the opportunity for peer support. We offer these via Teams to minimise disruption caused by respite needs and travel.
We currently offer four sessions provided on rotation – “Planning for the Future”; “Stress Awareness”; Denial and Lack of Insight”; and “The Progression of Dementia”. For more information on these sessions or to book your place please contact cdh@commlinks.co.uk
