From 18–24 May, it’s Dementia Action Week 2026 — a chance to raise awareness, support people living with dementia, and focus on protecting our brain health.
Dementia is not a normal part of ageing. While age is the biggest risk factor, research suggests up to 40% of dementia cases could be linked to lifestyle factors we may be able to change.
Simple steps can help reduce your risk:
- Stop smoking – See link to Yorkshire Smokefree Calderdale for help to quit
- Keep blood pressure and cholesterol under control
- Stay active
- Eat well
- Drink less alcohol
- Maintain a healthy weight
Calderdale’s Better Living Service, Sports and Fitness Service and Active Calderdale can provide support to get you moving and keep you healthy.
Keeping your mind and social life active matters as well. Reading, puzzles, learning new skills, meeting friends and volunteering can all support good brain health and wellbeing.
This Dementia Action Week, take one positive step for your brain health — and help make your community more dementia friendly.
