Project Colt Elland: Community, Connection and New Opportunities After 50

If you’re looking for a friendly, practical and welcoming place to spend time, Project Colt in Elland is a real community gem

It’s more than just a building, it’s a lively hub where local people of all ages – including many over 50 – come together to socialise, learn, volunteer and support one another.

Whether you’re newly retired, keen to stay active, or simply looking to meet new people, Project Colt offers something meaningful and local.

A Hub at the Heart of Elland

Project Colt provides flexible community space for groups, clubs, training and social events. The atmosphere is relaxed and inclusive – you don’t need to be a member of anything to get involved. Many people simply drop in for a chat, attend an activity or explore volunteering opportunities.

Regular sessions often include coffee mornings, creative groups, wellbeing activities and community events. It’s the sort of place where you quickly start to recognise familiar faces and feel part of something.

A Friendly Coffee Bar at the Centre

At the heart of Project Colt is its welcoming coffee bar, serving hot and cold drinks alongside light meals and snacks. Whether you fancy a proper cup of tea, a barista-style coffee, a slice of homemade cake or a simple lunch, it’s an ideal place to pause and relax.

For many visitors, the coffee bar is the starting point – somewhere to sit comfortably, read the noticeboard, meet a friend or strike up a conversation. It provides an affordable and informal setting where you can call in without needing to attend a specific activity.

Rusty’s Bike Club – Practical Skills and Friendly Faces

One of the most popular features at Project Colt is Rusty’s Bike Club.

This isn’t just for keen cyclists – it’s a welcoming space where people can bring bikes along for repairs, learn basic maintenance skills and share practical know-how. For some, it’s about getting back on two wheels; for others, it’s simply about the social side.

For over-50s in particular, Rusty’s Bike Club can be:

  • A chance to revive an old bike

  • An opportunity to learn new practical skills

  • A way to meet like-minded people

  • A gentle route back into physical activity

Even if you don’t cycle regularly, the workshop environment and friendly volunteers make it an enjoyable and sociable space to spend time.

The Repair Café – Fixing More Than Just Appliances

The Repair Café is another initiative hosted at Project Colt. Instead of throwing away broken household items, local residents can bring them along to be repaired by skilled volunteers.

From small electrical items to household objects, the aim is to reduce waste, save money and share skills across generations.

Many older residents have valuable “make do and mend” experience – and the Repair Café is a wonderful place to pass that knowledge on.

The Repair Cafe is held on the 1st Saturday of the month (except August) from 10.30am to 2.30pm.  Last items must be booked in by 2pm.

The Community Shop – Affordable and Sustainable

Project Colt also includes a community shop, offering affordable items while supporting local initiatives. Community shops like this are about more than retail – they help keep resources circulating locally and can ease financial pressures for residents.

The shop can also provide volunteering opportunities, whether helping with displays, sorting donations or welcoming customers. For anyone who enjoys a few hours of purposeful activity and conversation, it’s a rewarding way to get involved.

Volunteering After 50 – A Real Sense of Purpose

If you’re over 50, you bring a wealth of life experience to any organisation. Project Colt offers flexible volunteering roles across its clubs, events, café sessions and shop.

You might help at an event, support a workshop, assist in the shop or share a hobby or practical skill. Even a few hours a week can:

  • Build confidence

  • Reduce isolation

  • Provide structure to your week

  • Create new friendships

Many volunteers say they get just as much back as they give.

A Place to Belong

As we move into later life, having somewhere local, friendly and meaningful to go makes all the difference. Project Colt in Elland provides exactly that – a welcoming community space where practical skills, sustainability and social connection all come together.

If you haven’t visited yet, why not pop in and see what’s happening? You might just find a new hobby, a new friendship – or even a new purpose.

Project Colt is open from 9am to 5pm Mondays to Saturdays at Bridgefield Mills, Elland Bridge, Elland HX5 0SQ.
