Another great blog from our partners, fit20
At fit20 Halifax–Hipperholme, we believe that it’s never too late to become stronger. Sometimes, the biggest transformations aren’t just about physical strength, but about regaining confidence, independence and a new lease of life. This inspiring story of a mother and daughter shows just how much can change with 20 minutes of strength training once a week.
From Scepticism to Strength
When one of our members first heard about fit20 through a friend, she wasn’t convinced. “I was very sceptical about fit20 but went along for a free trial after a friend recommended it.” However, after meeting Loma, our lead trainer, and learning about the science and research behind the programme, her perspective began to change. Following a recent cancer diagnosis, she was looking for a safe, supportive way to rebuild her strength.
“I was impressed by the science and research behind the exercise programme, along with Loma’s calm, professional approach.”
But what happened next made her fit20 journey even more special.
A New Beginning at 88
Her 88-year-old mum had experienced two serious falls and major surgery the previous year. Her mobility and confidence had suffered, and despite encouragement to attend exercise classes,
she had always resisted. Until she heard about fit20. The idea of private, individually supervised sessions, without the pressure of a traditional gym environment, appealed to her immediately. She signed up without hesitation. And the transformation has been remarkable.
“I cannot believe the difference in her. Her confidence changed immediately and she began to believe she could get fitter and stronger.”
After just a few sessions, her daughter began noticing improvements not only in her strength but also in her outlook on life.
From Walking Stick to 7,000 Steps a Day
Perhaps the most incredible part of this story is the change in her mobility and independence. A year ago, she relied on a walking stick, walked with a stooped posture and lacked confidence in
her physical abilities. Today, at 88 years old, she stands taller, walks independently and hasn’t used her walking stick for 11 months. On a recent holiday, she was walking approximately 7,000 steps a day.
For her daughter, seeing this change has been extraordinary.
Two photographs, taken a year apart, tell a powerful story. One shows a lady relying on her stick for support. The other captures her standing upright and confidently, unaware that the photograph was even being taken.
More Than Just Strength Training
Both mother and daughter credit Loma’s encouragement, attention to detail and supportive approach.
“Loma gives us both great encouragement and is very attentive, correcting our posture and reminding us to breathe!”
At fit20, our sessions last just 20 minutes, once a week. Exercises are performed slowly and under close supervision, challenging the muscles whilst being gentle on the joints. For these two members, fit20 has become much more than an exercise programme. It’s about confidence, independence and enjoying life.
It’s Never Too Late to Get Stronger
From someone who initially doubted fit20 to someone who now recommends it to everyone, this member’s journey speaks volumes.
“From being a major sceptic, I am now a huge advocate for fit20 and tell everyone I speak to about what a difference it has made.”
At 88, her mum is proving that age doesn’t have to define what you’re capable of. Whether you’re rebuilding strength after illness, looking to maintain independence as you age, or simply wanting to feel stronger in everyday life, fit20 could be a great place to start. 20 minutes. Once a week. A stronger you.
