The Macular Society’s Newsletter

The Macular Society’s March 2025 e-newsletter is out. Below are the headlines – you can read the full newsletter here.

Welcome to your enewsletter. Each month I’m reminded how macular disease touches people’s lives and how they manage in different ways. But, one theme always remains and that is how much strength and determination so many of you show through what can be a life-changing diagnosis.

In this newsletter you can hear from Faith, a chef with Stargardt who wants to make cooking accessible to everyone, and Alan who is choosing to take part in research, driven by hope for better treatments in the years ahead. As well as stories of resilience, you’ll discover updates from researchers working to understand more about macular disease.

Could common Parkinson’s drug help treat wet AMD?
A new study will explore whether L-DOPA, could help people living with wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In this month’s My Macular and Me webinar Dr Katie Curran and professor Tunde Peto will be discussing what the study involves, why this research matters, and how you could play a role in shaping it.

Chef with Stargardt launches new cookbook for people with sight loss
A chef with Stargardt disease has written a new cookbook designed to make cooking accessible for anyone living with sight loss. Faith discusses the inspiration behind her new book, the challenges she has faced and her top tips for cooking with a visual impairment.

‘I’m convinced there will be a potential cure in the future’
Alan thought he just needed a new pair of glasses after he noticed something different about his vision while he was driving. He kept blinking thinking it would go away, but soon learnt this was something he would have to live with. He has now signed up to take part in research, in the hope that there will be a cure in his future.

Survey reveals patient experiences of macular treatment
A survey to better understand the perceptions of patients receiving anti-VEGF injections for macular conditions has highlighted the positive experiences of care, but also the need for shared decision making and better communication, particularly when treatment is changed or stopped.

“When you know you can help people, it gives you a buzz”
Peter has lived with a rare sight loss condition most of his life, but until a few years ago had never met another person living with it. In 2022 a chance encounter changed all that, leading him on a journey to help others with Stargardt disease.
