Here, in the second blog from our new partner, Anchor, who run a number of care homes in Calderdale, they look at a very special celebration for a resident
Life in Sandholme Fold care home, in Hipperholme, is about living, and Dorothy Towers, certainly knows how to do that. Dorothy celebrated turning 103 on Wednesday 29th April with a party with friends and relatives.
Centenarian Mrs Towers blew out her candles at the party held for her at Anchor’s care home in Hipperholme, where she has lived for 15 months. Dorothy was born in Manchester to parents Florence and William, before moving to Mytholmroyd.
Before she retired, Mrs Towers worked at Reynolds engineering. She is proud to be the loving mother to three children Martin 78, Brenda 76, and Johnathan 65 and has 6 grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Dorothy enjoyed her birthday celebrations with family and the team at Sandholme Fold, and she also had a surprise visit from The Mayor of Calderdale, Councillor Steven Leigh MBE, who congratulated Dorothy on her birthday, presented her with some flowers and sat and chatted with to Dorothy.
Mrs Towers was asked what the secret to a long life was and she replied saying “Staying strong through life’s challenges”.
Care home name Manager Tracy Marshall said: “Dorothy is a lovely person. She always likes to take part in the activities in the home; her favourite activities are arts and crafts and listening to the entertainment.”
Living in a care home should not mean that enjoying life stops. Day-to-day life at Sandholme Fold is full of opportunities for connection and joy. Our engaging activities include encourage gentle movement and regular activity with our Zest exercise programme, offering chair- based exercise, music sessions and craft groups to keep spirits high and support mobility. We also cherish individual activities and one to one time, such as pampering, reading or simply enjoying a conversation and laughter.
We tailor activities to our residents’ interests and hobbies, whilst the community atmosphere instilled into the home and care team ensure residents continue to live life to the fullest, surrounded by plenty of love and happiness. From personalised cakes baked by our in-house catering team to individual celebrations, no milestone is overlooked. Loved ones are warmly invited to join us, making each occasion a truly special gathering.
Community Partnership Manager, David Wood was asked why creating a solid community within Anchor care homes is paramount: “At Anchor we recognise that every resident is unique, with wonderful stories to tell. It’s our job to uncover these amazing stores from their past and continue helping our residents to write their stories and enable residents to live their lives to the fullest. That is not something that can be done by one individual but takes the support of the Home Manager, all the staff, residents and families coming together as well as support from the homes’ community. It’s moments like this, celebrating Dorothy’s birthday, that really show us why we do what we do.”
