Fitness and Strength Training Open Day coming up on 9 February

Learn more about the Fit20 strength training concept helping to keep older people fit and healthy in West Yorkshire.

On Sunday 9th February our partners Fit20 are hosting an open day to celebrate one year in Halifax including a tour of this unique fitness gym and a chance to see the equipment in action and learn more about the Fit20 training technique.  In this partner blog, Katherine Kivalu from Fit 20 explains how it works.

‘Fit20 training is different from other gyms.  It is achievable, convenient and it works. At fit20 you train once per week and always with a personal trainer. Our training method is based on the latest scientific findings about effective and efficient training to improve health and fitness.

We lose roughly 1% of muscle every year from our mid-50s; by 80, longevity expert Peter Attia says, the average person will have shed 8kg, or about 18lb of muscle. Not only does this make it harder to carry the shopping or open stuck jars; it undermines our balance and weakens our bones. Less muscle means we are more likely to fall and injure ourselves and that we will fail to recover. There’s a big movement across both fitness and medicine in longevity. As Attia puts it,

“If you are interested in living a long and healthy life and playing with your great-grandkids someday, then muscle mass should be a priority. Never in the history of human civilisation has a 90-year-old said, ‘I wish I had less muscle.’”

We all want to live longer, but we want to do it being able to do the things we love. We need to keep using and building muscle as we age. As the saying goes, ‘use it or lose it’.
