Falls Prevention Awareness Week – Latest Advice

Falls Prevention Awareness Week is 21st – 25th September 2026

Falls prevention awareness week is a global campaign to increase awareness of falls and related injury.

Falls are not an inevitable part of ageing, and there is a lot you can do to cut your risk. This Falls Prevention Awareness Week, Age Friendly Calderdale and the Calderdale Falls Prevention Network have produced a free Falls Prevention Awareness Pack, packed with practical advice to help you or someone you care about stay steady, confident and independent.

Download the pack from Calderdale Forum 50 Plus – download here. Alternatively, pick one up from Age UK Calderdale & Kirklees in Halifax or ask your healthcare provider for a copy.

Why it matters

A fall isn’t just a physical risk. Even when there’s no injury, it can shake someone’s confidence, chip away at their independence, and have knock-on effects for the whole family.

The good news is that small, simple changes can make a big difference.

Three things you can do this week

1. Get moving
Regular activity is one of the most powerful tools against falls. Physical activity builds strength and balance and helps you feel steadier on your feet. You don’t need a gym: walking, gardening, climbing the stairs and dancing all count! Aim for strength and balance activities at least twice a week. There are lots of local groups, classes and sessions across Calderdale to help you get started or stay active. The Awareness Pack has details of what’s available near you, plus 6 physio-approved exercises you can try at home.

2. Check your home
The home is one of the biggest falls risks of all. This week, take a look around and:
• Clear clutter and trip hazards
• Use non-slip mats and rugs
• Make sure stairs and rooms are well lit
• Swap socks and slippers for well-fitting, supportive shoes indoors
• Keep your home at a minimum of 18°C as cold homes increase falls risk

3. Speak up
Had a fall, a near miss, or have a fear of falling? Tell your GP, even if you weren’t hurt. Many causes of falls can be treated or corrected, whether that’s a medication review, an eyesight or hearing check, or a referral for extra support.
