From 1 June 2026, construction will begin on the Huddersfield Bus Station project, led by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Here’s their round-up of advice and info for people using the bus station during the work:
The transformation of the bus station is part of our commitment to deliver the Weaver Network, a unified sustainable transport network that will help create a happier, healthier, better-off West Yorkshire by connecting people with the places and opportunities that matter. Huddersfield will be our third Weaver Network bus station in Kirklees with Heckmondwike and Dewsbury set to open this year.
You will start to see the Weaver Network coming to life across the region’s transport network, gradually replacing West Yorkshire Metro. As we get to work, you may notice some changes to your usual bus stop, bus or rail station and signs. Don’t worry, you do not need to do anything at the moment, bus services will continue to run and all existing tickets and passes remain valid throughout this transition, even if your stop looks a little different.
The works will take place in phases over around two years, with completion expected in early 2028.
The project includes:
- A full refurbishment of the bus station interior.
- New finishes, furniture and fittings.
- Significant accessibility improvements.
- Safety and security improvements.
- Improvements to the bus station exterior and retail units.
At the same time, Kirklees Council will be delivering other nearby projects, including a new entrance canopy with seating, lighting, CCTV, and cycle storage.
Changes you need to know about – Phase 1
To carry out the works, some temporary changes will start from June 2026. We want to give you advance notice so you can plan ahead.
Coach services
- From 1 June 2026, all coach services will stop using Huddersfield Bus Station and will use Westgate W4 (near Nawaab Indian Restaurant). This will remain in place until the works finish in early 2028.
Macaulay Square
- From 1 June 2026, part of Macaulay Square will be fenced off for the construction of temporary site cabins. Some walking routes across the square will change.
Henry Street entrance
- From 14 June 2026, the Henry Street entrance to the bus station will close. This closure will last until January 2027. You will need to use the main entrance or the Macaulay Square side entrance to get into the bus station.
Bus stand changes
- From 14 June 2026:
- Service X49 will move to Stand M2 on Market Street (near The Plumbers Arms).
- Service 315 will move to Stand H1 on High Street (across the road from Civic Centre 1).
- All other bus services will remain in the bus station but some will depart from different stands than usual. Information on stand changes is attached and will be available at the bus station as posters and leaflets and will be shared online via www.wyweaver.com. Real time information will be available at each stand to let you know which services are departing at any given time.
- A new stand, Z2, will be created just outside the bus station
- Access will be controlled and only open when a bus is present on the stand.
- Real-time information will be visible from the nearby seating area in stand Z.
- Travel Centre and toilets
- From 30 June 2026, the Travel Centre and public toilets inside the bus station will close temporarily.
- These, including the accessible toilet, will move to temporary cabins in Macaulay Square.
- This arrangement will last until around January 2027.
Support during the works
We understand that changes like these can be challenging. To help support people with disabilities:
- There will be clear signage and information throughout the bus station.
- Updated timetables and posters will be provided.
- Additional staff will be available on site around the transition dates to offer help and guidance.
- Information and Easy Read Materials will be shared through email, posters, social media and the Wyweaver website. If you require information in an alternative format please contact TransportProjects@westyorks-ca.gov.uk
