As we get older, we might need support to stay in our own homes. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it may help to think about changes you can make that can lighten your load. Small modifications around your home can often make daily life simpler. There are many ways to get more support at home. You might want help with household tasks like cooking, cleaning or shopping. Or, you might need help looking after yourself.
The older person’s organisation, Independent Age, has prepared a guide on the subject:
Getting help at home advice guide
It looks at equipment and adaptations to make your life easier, gadgets to make you feel safer and how to get help with personal care at home.
Your care needs assessment
If you’re struggling with daily tasks like washing, dressing or cooking, contact your local council’s adult social services department. The council must give you an assessment if you appear to need care and support, regardless of your income or savings or whether they think you’ll qualify for their help.
Before your assessment, make a list of anything you need help with. You could use Independent Age’s checklist to help you prepare. Read their factsheet for more tips on preparing for a care needs assessment.
