A major clinical trial by Frank Lin, James Pike, Marilyn Albert and colleagues, published in The Lancet in 2023, followed nearly 1,000 older adults aged 70–84 with untreated hearing loss over three years. Those given hearing aids and audiologic counselling saw their cognitive decline slow by 48% compared to those who received health education alone, with the strongest effect seen in those already at higher risk.
It’s one of the clearest pieces of evidence yet that hearing loss isn’t just about missing words in conversation. Treating it can directly help protect the brain, not just support day-to-day hearing.
It makes sense when you think about how hearing and thinking are connected. When sounds become harder to process, the brain has to work harder just to keep up with a conversation, filling in gaps and making sense of speech that isn’t coming through clearly. Over time, that extra effort can mean less capacity left over for memory, focus and processing information generally. Addressing hearing loss early may help take some of that strain away, freeing up mental energy for the things that matter.
It’s also a helpful reminder that hearing loss rarely announces itself all at once. It tends to creep in gradually — a television turned up a little louder each year, conversations in busy rooms feeling more tiring than they used to, or missing the odd word here and there without quite noticing a pattern. Because the change is so gradual, it’s easy to adapt around it rather than address it. This research suggests that adapting isn’t quite the same as protecting your long-term health.
At Hearing Check, we take the time to understand your hearing properly, with no pressure and no assumptions about what you need. Every hearing journey looks different, so rather than jumping straight to a solution, we start by listening — to how your hearing is affecting your day-to-day life, your conversations, and the moments that matter most to you.
We know that booking a hearing assessment can feel like a small step, but as this research shows, it may have a much bigger impact than people realise, both now and for the years ahead.
If it’s been a while since your last check, or you’ve never had one, there’s no better time to find out where you stand.
