From 11 March: A Hat for all Seasons
Opening 11th March 2023 in Bankfield Museum’s Link Gallery, Celebrating all things hats! This new exhibition examines the style, function, and symbolism of headwear in British society. Showcasing highlights from the Museum collection and contemporary examples from Yorkshire milliners, the exhibition traces the evolution of the hat from the bonnet and topper of the Nineteenth Century to Royal Ascot and catwalk showstoppers of the present day.

This exclusive exhibition features highlights from the private collection of dress historian Lucy Adlington. Lucy runs the History Wardrobe series of costume-in-context presentations, combining history, fashion and tons of fun. The collection spans over 250 years of design, making, wearing and sharing. Whether ‘glad rags’ or just rags, this exhibition celebrates the way clothes hold powerful memories and link us across generations. There will be four History Wardrobe presentations at Bankfield Museum during 2023.

Smith Art Gallery Closed
Calderdale Museums are currently in the process of redecorating Smith Art Gallery and will be closed throughout the month of March. The gallery will reopen in April with our Highlights from the Smith Collection, showcasing a selection of the best examples of oil paintings that Alderman and Mrs. William Smith bequeathed to the people of Brighouse in 1907.
