Anne Lister in Halifax: arch-traditionalist or ‘first modern lesbian’?

Halifax Civic Trust are hosting a talk about local historic celebrity, Anne Lister of Shibden Hall. The talk will be led by Dr Jill Liddington.

Dr Jill Liddington is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Leeds. Her expertise lies with women’s history, especially gender and class in nineteenth and twentieth century Britain.

Jill is the celebrated author of Female Fortune: the Anne Lister diaries 1833-36. This was the book that inspired TV scriptwriter Sally Wainwright to write Gentleman Jack (BBC1/HBO). It was also the book Sally chose to take with her if she was ever trapped on a desert island (BBC R4).

We are holding this fund-raising talk in conjunction with Jill, a member of Halifax Civic Trust, and afterwards there will be a book signing of Female Fortune.

The event will be held at The Albany Club at Hope Hall 57 Clare Rd, Halifax HX1 2JP which has connections to Anne Lister by being home to Christopher Rawson her coal rival.

The event starts at 14.00 with a 40 minute talk followed by Q&A. There are refreshments of Tea & Coffee and biscuits.

This is a Fund raising event and Tickets are now on sale at £15.00 with the proceeds going towards Halifax Civic Trust. This event is open to everyone, including members of Halifax Civic Trust. They welcome people to come and enjoy this event and support their work. This promises to be a popular event and early booking is advised.
