Old age and fear of crime – cross-national evidence for a decreased impact of neighbourhood disadvantage in older age
A new study by Kober G et al, Ageing and Society, 42 (7) July 2022
Fear of crime in older age has been a frequent issue in ageing research. This newish study looks at the interaction between neighbourhood disadvantage and fear of crime. Contrary to expectation it finds that, in older age, ‘living in a disadvantaged neighbourhood’ has less of an effect on fear or crime than at younger ages, with the effect falling by around 50% between the ages of 25 and 92.
