Since 2016, the Council’s Housing Strategy and Growth Team have been working in partnership with Home Group, to develop a 65 apartment dementia friendly extra care scheme on the outskirts of Brighouse town centre.
The scheme which will be welcoming residents early in 2022, has a multitude of facilities, including multiple communal / activity areas and two elevated garden areas. It also includes facilities that will be open for use by the general public, together with a salon, café bar, restaurant, assisted bathing suite and a guest room.
Five of the apartments will be available to purchase through shared ownership which can help assist some people to unlock capital they may have in a larger family-sized home and enable older people to downsize (find out more here), whilst the rest of the apartments will be set at affordable rental prices. The close proximity to Brighouse town centre and regular transport links means that the scheme and its residents will contribute to the local economy as well as creating new employment and training opportunities through the construction and health-related industries.
Not only will the scheme increase the housing and care options available to older people in our borough, including those living with dementia, it will also support their partners and carers, helping them to maintain their independence in circumstances that otherwise might leave them little choice but to go into residential care. The scheme will be the only dementia focused extra care scheme in the borough and one of few in the North.
