Introducing Heartbeat

HEARTBEAT was founded in October 2006 for people in West Yorkshire who had or were at risk of having a cardiac event. Our aim is to improve the quality of life and the life expectancy of our Members. The Charity, registered in England and Wales, number 1156951, is run by volunteer Trustees. Since the beginning 689 people have been Members, with today’s Membership standing at 245.

HEARTBEAT originally offered 1 class per week. Today; 2 Tai Chi classes, 5 Exercise classes weekly, 3 walks per fortnight and in a “normal year” 36 Social Events. Behind the scenes we try to be professional in everything we do, in our activities we try make them fun and enjoyable.

Classes take place at the Brighouse Sports Club, Russell Way, Brighouse, HD6 4LX in a fully air-conditioned hall with disabled facilities and free parking.

We have a wide range of equipment: 1 cross trainer, 4 bikes, 2 foot bikes, 2 hand bikes, 2 rowers, steps, weights, bands and BMI scales. Our Trainers are BACR trained.

Classes cost £2:50 each and Annual Membership is £5:00. Walks are free. All Members become members of Brighouse Sports Club at no cost. In 2006 classes were £2:00 each.

Members are registered with 33 different Surgeries with Church Lane, Rydings Hall and Northolme contributing more than 50%.

Anyone over 18 who meets our criteria can join. The criteria are have/had: a cardiac event/diagnosis, high blood pressure or cholesterol, Diabetes types 1 or 2, overweight BMI >25 or a carer for a Member.

Our oldest female Member is 93 and oldest male 92. We have male, female and transgender Members, with people from originally 7 countries outside of the UK. We have Members with other disabilities/ailments: COPD, Downs, visual impairment, deaf, MS, stroke, arthritis/rheumatism, dementia, mental health and Parkinson’s. 17 are registered disabled.

In the months we were closed due to Covid, we ran Zoom classes, provided exercise and Tai Chi YouTube videos, mailed 24 updates on Covid, WYTS scam alerts, NHS and BHF information plus our plans. We set up a “Keep in Touch” group to talk to lonely or isolated Members. All our Trainers, Trustees and Walk Leaders are First Aid Trained and DBS checked.

In 2008 we purchased an AED to use at classes and walks. In 2014, after discussions with YAS, we started raising funds to provide Public Access AEDs in the Brighouse area. To date we have helped raise over £19,000, installed 10 units, helped Brighouse Rotary install 2 and trained over 200 members of the public in CPR and using AED’s. At least 1 life has been saved.

The charity is 98+% self-funding and has reserves equal to half its annual expenditure. We are fully insured. The Trainers are paid for the hours they work, no Trustees / Members receive any payment or expenses.
