WINTER: Energy & Heating Help

Free Home Energy Checks

Age UK Calderdale & Kirklees is working with two energy companies – E.ON and First Utility – to support older people to keep safe and warm in Winter. Until March 2016, the Handyman service will be able to carry out free home energy checks.

The aim of the checks is to deliver practical energy efficiency information and expert advice to older people. The project will enable older people to change energy use behaviour and benefit from small practical measures which could potentially reduce their energy bills whilst remaining warm and well in their own homes.

To qualify for the Home Energy check you must be Over 65 and on low income (below £16,190 p.a) and /or Over 65 and vulnerable (with a physical or mental disability or a medical condition) or living in a hard to heat property.

Warm at Home Scheme

Living in a warm, comfortable home helps to prevent and ease the symptoms of cold related respiratory illnesses such as heart and lung conditions as well as reducing the risk of falls for older people. It can also help people who have chronic joint conditions such as arthritis and those people who have a physical disability or mental illness which may limit movement and/or mean that the occupant spends a lot of time at home.

There are various energy efficiency subsidies, discounts and payments that aim to help those on certain qualifying benefits. Through speaking to the Housing Energy Action Team, most people who qualify for assistance have benefited by

  • Reducing their bills;
  • Making their home warmer;
  • Gaining confidence and control over their energy bills
    and the efficiency of their home.
