ADVICE: How To Spot & Avoid Scams

Criminals worldwide are sending letters and making phone calls which trick millions of people into parting with billions of pounds every year. It is important to keep vigilant. These are some of the

Words scammers use: “Won the Lottery”, “Highly Confidential”, “Guaranteed Winner”, “Unclaimed prize/award”; some even say “This is not a Scam”! Some claim to be your bank or building society, or the police. Some claim to be debt recovery companies, threatening court action for non-payment of a fictitious bill. Stay Scam-safe:

If you receive a “dazzling” letter, DO NOT respond and NEVER send cash, disclose personal details or buy goods to claim a prize.

If you receive a suspicious phone call:

  • You don’t have to get into a discussion
  • NEVER give out personal information. Say “no thank you, I am not interested” and hang up immediately
